GEDA at the 11F day!

Within the framework of the 11F activities, Balma Albalat Oliver visited the IES Quartó de Rei in Santa Eulària des Riu, Ibiza, to give two outreach talks to 120 students aged 12–13 (1st ESO groups).

 She shared her career journey in science, showing students what it’s like to work in field research and the different paths that can lead to a career in science. Participation was encouraged, making science tangible through interactive activities. Students also got a hands-on look at field samples and learned about s tools for sampling. 

The sessions also highlighted the challenges and achievements of women in science, including:

• Recovering the stories of pioneering women in ornithology
• Recognizing the contributions of female scientists today
• Promoting safe and inclusive workplaces
• Encouraging young girls to pursue research in ecology and population studies

By combining science education with stories of personal and professional growth, these activities aim to inspire the next generation of female scientists while raising awareness about ecology and conservation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Exhibition at the Natural History Museum in Soller !

Friday 23rd of May there will be the opening of the exhibition "WHEN DATA SPEAKS: THE HEARTBEAT OF BALEARIC WILDLIFE" at the Botanical Garden of Sóller / Museum of Natural Sciences - MUCBO next Friday, May 23rd at 7:00 PM.

The exhibition will present the results of the project BIO2022/003 "Impact of multiple threats on population trends of terrestrial vertebrate species in the Balearic Islands." carried out by Dr. A. Rotger and Dr. A Ana Sanz-Aguilar from the GEDA.

It aims to raise awareness about Balearic terrestrial vertebrate fauna, the threats they face, and the importance of scientific monitoring to improve their conservation.

GEDA conference on Lizards !

Dr. A. Rotger will give a seminar on the ecology and life-history of the Balearic Wall lizard at the Visitor Centre of Carbrera National Park in Colonia St Jordi.

The European Storm Petrel on "Es Busqueret"

A popular science article on Storm Petrel foraging trips from Ibiza has been published in the "Es Busqueret" (vol. 51, pag 12-17), the natural history journal of the Balearic Island (in catalan). It adds more evidence to the recent article by Rotger et al. published in Ardeola (here) from Storm petrels breeding in the Balearic Island.

Ring-necked parakeet in Sevilla!

On the wildlife journal Quercus  this month A. Luna published an interesting article  on the Ring-necked parakeet in Sevilla (Spain) and the potential conflict that invasive species can generate.

GEDA at the"GOB on Thursday" and at the "Nit de la Recerca"

Ainara Cortés-Avizanda from the GEDA (Animal Demography and Ecology Unit) will present her research on the arriving of the Griffon Vulture in Mallorca. A conference framed into the "GOB on Thursday" meeting organized by the Balearic Ornithological Group.  Tomorrow h19h30 at "Centre Cultural Sa Nostra", Palma


  
Friday 27th GEDA will be at the "Nit de la Recerca", a speed-dating session to learn the different ongoing scientific projects in the Balearic Islands.

Upcoming Conference at the University of Valencia

GEDA was invited to present a conference at the University of Valencia on seabird survival Thursday the 19th of September 2019.

Wind Power and Biodiversity

A. Sanz-Aguilar has collaborated on the video "Wind Power and Biodiversity" (in Spanish) where vultures are sentinels of Wind Power mortality.

GEDA at the 11F-Balears !

The GEDA joined the 11F-Balears during the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. A Sanz-Aguilar, M. Serra and A. Cortés-Avizanda participated to the "Science Speed Dating" (at the French international school, the Molta Barra and the Caixa Forum in Palma).
 
Marta made the point on the Grifon vulture proyect and introduced a real-size vulture model. Three persons were necessary to fully open its wings! More on 11F activities here.

Balearic Wall Lizards at "Darrer Dijous"

Dr A. Rotger spoke of the Balearic Wall Lizard at the "Darrer Dijous" conferences. 
A great initiative organized  by the Balearic Ornithological Group (GOB) to popularize scientific research.
