with variations in HTI linked to species' population trends, providing
valuable insights for conservation planning and identifying species at
risk</p><p><i> Abstract: </i>Some
species thrive in human-dominated environments, while others are highly
sensitive to all human pressures. However, standardized estimates of
species' tolerances to human pressures are lacking at large spatial
extents and taxonomic breadth. Here, we quantify the world's bird
species' tolerances to human pressures. The associated precision values
can be applied to scientific research and conservation. We used binary observation data from eBird and
modelled species' occurrences as a function of the Human Footprint Index
(HFI). With these models, we predicted how likely each species was to
occur under different levels of human pressures.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhj1yTJ55NaaQvWLY9IX5_74jVy6nd184hIKETbRWeZP51liH3lXbosBj_I7MUOeUm2zXYgWU9i4QHfdzOpW3PCYlWzPoIwWlPY6VRn6qfXEqeL144u0So0WxYMVv7SXfqr7kV2CzNhNjnHLm0zWdMHjHON6-tDQWT2uKbR_FfKkHXmbB0AX2QK8gJJtTX/s917/HIF.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="611" data-original-width="917" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhj1yTJ55NaaQvWLY9IX5_74jVy6nd184hIKETbRWeZP51liH3lXbosBj_I7MUOeUm2zXYgWU9i4QHfdzOpW3PCYlWzPoIwWlPY6VRn6qfXEqeL144u0So0WxYMVv7SXfqr7kV2CzNhNjnHLm0zWdMHjHON6-tDQWT2uKbR_FfKkHXmbB0AX2QK8gJJtTX/s320/HIF.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p>Then, we calculated
each species' Human Tolerance Index (HTI) as the level of the HFI where
predicted occurrence probability was reduced to 50% of the maximum
species' occurrence probability. We used resampling to obtain estimates
of uncertainty of the Human Tolerance Indices. We also compared
tolerances across species with increasing, stable, and decreasing
population trends. We found that 22% of the bird species tolerated the
most modified human-dominated environments, whereas 0.001% of species
only occurred in the intact environments. We also found that HTI varied
according to species' population trend categories, whereby species with
decreasing population trends had a lower tolerance than species with
increasing or stable population trends. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoIOpHWSFu_c6lk4GkLYmhadwR49WEdOKpcNmXGtlGD9EV1huCs4VLoqv-inQq-gFXOvxUQrVfEkkokDU7iARgGQyaUsqScFYdOxXIfaJE0bkaOIUpdP5xCen-HkYFl4J7j_x9GsJEsPdr6YY0uPmI5teIRDA8lugspMNL7OH4HvBw8g5KDwCjJsxt6Fk9/s1339/ebIrdsHIF.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1339" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoIOpHWSFu_c6lk4GkLYmhadwR49WEdOKpcNmXGtlGD9EV1huCs4VLoqv-inQq-gFXOvxUQrVfEkkokDU7iARgGQyaUsqScFYdOxXIfaJE0bkaOIUpdP5xCen-HkYFl4J7j_x9GsJEsPdr6YY0uPmI5teIRDA8lugspMNL7OH4HvBw8g5KDwCjJsxt6Fk9/s320/ebIrdsHIF.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>The estimated HTI indicates the potential of species
to exist in a landscape of intensifying human pressures. It can identify
species unable to tolerate these environments and inform subsequent
conservation efforts. We found evidence that species' sensitivity to
human-dominated environments may be driving birds' use of space. Bird
species' tolerances are also linked to their population trends, making
the tolerances a relevant addition to conservation planning.<p></p><section class="article-section__content" id="geb13816-sec-0007">

population models (IPMs) represent the powerful combination, typically
around a single matrix population model, of multiple data sources that
are informative about the dynamics of an animal population. Typical IPMs
combine one or more time-series of counts with other data sets that are
directly informative about survival probabilities, such as
ring-recovery or capture-recapture, or about productivity, such as nest
survey data. However, many other sources of demographic information may
be envisioned instead or in addition, including age-at-death data, radio
tracking data, occupancy or replicated point count data. For
non-statisticians the only practical manner to develop and fit IPMs is
by using BUGS software (JAGS and Nimble). This course is a practical and
hands-on introduction to developing and fitting integrated population
models. It is based on the new book by Schaub & Kéry, Integrated
Population Models (Academic Press, 2022). Beyond IPMs, the course
also provides a broad introduction for ecologists and wildlife managers
to a wide variety of models fit using BUGS software.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Contents include the following topics:</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">1. Basic introduction: </span><br />• Hierarchical models as an overarching theme of population modelling, including IPMs<br />• Bayesian analysis of hierarchical models<br />• Introduction to BUGS software in the context of GLMs and traditional random-effects models<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">2. Ingredients of Integrated Population Models:</span><br />• State-space models for time-series of counts<br />• Cormack-Jolly-Seber models for estimating survival probabilities<br />• Multistate capture-recapture models for estimating survival and transition probabilities<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">3. Integrated Population Models (IPMs)</span><br />• Introduction to matrix population models and their analysis with BUGS<br />• Theory of integrated population models<br />• Various case studies which differ in complexity and in the data types that are combined<br /><br />In
this intermediate-level workshop about 80% of the time is spent on
lecturing and 20% on solving exercises. No previous experience with BUGS
software, or Bayesian statistics, is assumed. However, <span style="font-weight: bold;">a good working knowledge of modern regression methods (linear models, GLMs) and of program R is required</span>. Moreover, a basic understanding of capture-recapture and/or occupancy models is highly desirable.<br /><br />Send your application to Michael Schaub (<a href="mailto:michael.schaub@vogelwarte.ch">michael.schaub@vogelwarte.ch</a>), with CC to Marc Kéry (<a href="mailto:marc.kery@vogelwarte.ch">marc.kery@vogelwarte.ch</a>); describing your background and knowledge in statistical modelling, R and JAGS/Nimble, and capture-recapture, by <span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: #4000ff;">30 April 2024</span> </span>at the latest. The beauty of
birds exerts a powerful tug on human emotions, and bird-rich areas
attract scores of eco-tourists. People naturally find some birds more
beautiful or interesting than others, but we currently lack a global
understanding of the specifics of what makes a species aesthetically
attractive. Here, we used a global citizen-science database on bird
attractiveness covering nearly all extant bird species, to show that
there are specific visual features that drive our aesthetic appeal for
some bird species over others. First, our aesthetic attraction is
highest for smaller birds with specific, vivid colors (e.g., blue and
red, and departing from brown-grey) and extreme ornaments (a long crest
or tail). Second, our aesthetic attraction is highest for species with
broad ranges, possibly because such species may be more familiar to us.
The features that make us attracted to a particular bird strongly align
with broad human visual aesthetic preferences in modern society.
Unveiling the visual features underpinning our aesthetic attraction to
birds is a critical step towards optimizing conservation (e.g., via
conservation marketing) and education campaigns, and leverage the
cultural ecosystem service potential of birds. <br /><p></p><p> </p><p> </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-14386490955893390492023-10-13T23:03:00.001+02:002023-10-13T23:04:06.584+02:00Shearwaters on the news!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRYodc2-bb4ACFEON-bPoule93OKp8_ShARaUeTUB4bVEenldviWb45-MzQVtUmYW6-0Og-Au0jSxvyX4CRhUlb7fNnEP8-O42QcxKuBiv90WzqiFfklOXkZ1mqiWD9wqVIBP_e2m3B1lABNfTlwQ5DbO0gmxCX5Xyn5U2WvlMge9DX1ddCplIfPODOauB/s1137/JMI.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="607" data-original-width="1137" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRYodc2-bb4ACFEON-bPoule93OKp8_ShARaUeTUB4bVEenldviWb45-MzQVtUmYW6-0Og-Au0jSxvyX4CRhUlb7fNnEP8-O42QcxKuBiv90WzqiFfklOXkZ1mqiWD9wqVIBP_e2m3B1lABNfTlwQ5DbO0gmxCX5Xyn5U2WvlMge9DX1ddCplIfPODOauB/w413-h221/JMI.jpg" width="413" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;"> J.-M. dispersal, seed dispersal by gulls is expected to be especially
instrumental in island ecosystems, as these have a smaller subset of
frugivores when compared to the mainland, and because long-distance
dispersal is required for plant colonisation. Here, we investigated the
seed dispersal of olives by gulls among 10 islands of the same
archipelago to reveal if gulls contribute to long-distance seed
dispersal including different islands, and how gulls' adaptation to
domestic olives and individual differences in foraging activities affect
their seed dispersal pattern. <br /><br /></div><div>Location:Balearic Islands in the Western Mediterranean Sea, Spain.Taxon:Yellow-legged gulls (<i>Larus michahellis</i>), Domestic and wild Olives (<i>Olea europaea</i> and <i>O. europaea var. sylvestris</i>).Methods:We developed seed dispersal models of the two ecotypes
of olives dispersed by gulls across an archipelago, based on GPS
tracking data, gut passage time and seed viability. Results:Mean dispersal distances were 7.67 (±12.48) km in wild
and 12.57 (±13.08) km in domestic olives. 7.1% of wild and 8.5% of
domestic olives were dispersed among islands. Among these, 8.2% of
domestic seeds were transported from large to small islands where gull
colonies are located, whereas wild olives were dispersed in more
variable directions. Such dispersal pattern of two olive ecotypes was
consistent despite the differences in dispersal distances among
individuals. Gulls contributed to long-distance olive seed
dispersal including different islands. The seed dispersal of domestic
olives to longer distances with specific directions may facilitate
colonisation and expansion of that variant if the conditions of seed
deposition sites are suitable. Our findings indicate that gulls are
relevant vectors for long-distance dispersal of large fleshy fruits in
island ecosystems where specialist large frugivores are absent.<br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-47182380303560294982023-09-26T08:47:00.004+02:002023-09-26T08:47:36.770+02:00New publication on gulls and landfills!<p><b>Delgado, S., Tavecchia, G., Herrero, A. <i>et al.</i> </b><a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10344-023-01723-w">Model projections reveal a recent decrease in a yellow-legged gull population after landfill closure.</a>

of the Basque coast (northern Iberia) collected over a 15-year period,
we estimated survival and reproductive parameters and used them to
parameterize an age-structured population model to explore the effects
of the local landfill closure. Local survival probability declined with
time as a consequence of the progressive closure of the local landfill
sites. The top-ranked models included a quadratic function of time,
suggesting an acceleration of mortality during the later years,
especially in juveniles, while survival in adults was linear. An effect
more pronounced in first year birds than in older birds. Population
models predict a decrease of the population and confirmed a greater
sensitivity of the population growth rate to adult survival probability.
Overall, our results suggest that the reduced carrying capacity of the
system resulted after landfill closures have caused a population decline
which is expected to continue in the near future. <p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-12486148797200701922023-09-19T11:39:00.004+02:002023-09-22T16:58:19.406+02:00New publication on illegal and accidental hunting!<p><big><b>Pérez‐García, J. by GPS since 2018 (<i>n</i> = 42) and from a mark–recapture programme initiated in 2015 (<i>n</i> = 297).
We recovered 15 dead birds or transmitters: 20% died of natural causes,
60% of non-natural causes (including all anthropic causes) and 20% of
unknown causes. Furthermore, the GPS tags of 24 birds unexpectedly
stopped transmitting without any indication of malfunction, and for
66.7% of these disappeared birds, the cessation was suspected to be
caused by illegal shooting. Survival during the hunting season was
higher for males (31.3%) than for females (12.5%), and for the wild
(50%) than for the captive-bred birds (9.4%), probably due to
differences in migration patterns to North Africa. Population viability
models revealed that maintaining the breeding population at the current
mortality rates is only possible with a permanent release programme of
captive-bred individuals, and that in order to establish a
self-sustaining population, non-natural mortality would have to be
reduced by at least 40%. We recommend management measures to reduce
marbled teal mortality, such as limiting legal hunting to hours with
clear visibility, prosecuting illegal shootings, controlling exotic
predators and improving water management to reduce disease outbreaks.
Some improvements can be implemented in captive-breeding programmes,
such as earlier release times and incorporating anti-predator training.<big></big></p><p><big>A press note (in Spanish) <a href="https://imedea.uib-csic.es/divulgacion-y-comunicacion/noticias/?new_id=2029">here</a></big></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-55198626238446996892023-09-18T11:59:00.000+02:002023-09-18T11:59:05.343+02:00New publication on the effect of protected areas!<p><b>Santangeli, A., Weigel, B., Antão, L.H. <i>et al.</i> <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-41073-4">Mixed effects of a national protected area network on terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity.</a> <i>Nat Commun</i> 14</b>, 5426 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-41073-4</p><p><i>In a shell: </i>Only a small fraction

However, evidence for their effectiveness in averting local extinctions
remains scarce and taxonomically biased. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYWfdnn72FLc1Wrb86lkLR80YMfodg4WxDhF9Bxswm3jWqjNR-z0EOXfy3drGdDzV-LSvS5j3DPHivWVFvJqIQyTqUQoKcwdu5EAA6M5JhbGViZNY2-OAgxS_oDtVNHsOea7uSKc-Aeaws-UfdrMk3v_U2ay8iRrt9yJWoKWo4vANpg4mrEd38239GPzc8/s689/NPAfromWikipedia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="538" data-original-width="689" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYWfdnn72FLc1Wrb86lkLR80YMfodg4WxDhF9Bxswm3jWqjNR-z0EOXfy3drGdDzV-LSvS5j3DPHivWVFvJqIQyTqUQoKcwdu5EAA6M5JhbGViZNY2-OAgxS_oDtVNHsOea7uSKc-Aeaws-UfdrMk3v_U2ay8iRrt9yJWoKWo4vANpg4mrEd38239GPzc8/s320/NPAfromWikipedia.jpg" width="320" /></a>We employ a robust
counterfactual multi-taxon approach to compare occupancy patterns of 638
species, including birds (150), mammals (23), plants (39) and
phytoplankton (426) between protected and unprotected sites across four
decades in Finland. We find mixed impacts of protected areas, with only a
small proportion of species explicitly benefiting from
protection—mainly through slower rates of decline inside protected
areas. The benefits of protection are enhanced for larger protected
areas and are traceable to when the sites were protected, but are mostly
unrelated to species conservation status or traits (size, climatic
niche and threat status). Our results suggest that the current protected
area network can partly contribute to slow down declines in occupancy
rates, but alone will not suffice to halt the biodiversity crisis.
Efforts aimed at improving coverage, connectivity and management will be
key to enhance the effectiveness of protected areas towards bending the
curve of biodiversity loss.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-86830369852740934332023-09-13T15:09:00.000+02:002023-09-13T15:09:47.250+02:00New publication on plastic and Storm Petrels!<p><b>Clark, B.L., Carneiro, A.P.B., [...] Sanz-Aguilar, A.,[...] Rotger, A., <i>et al.</i> <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-38900-z">Global assessment of marine plastic exposure risk for oceanic birds.

Likewise, marine organisms that are vulnerable to plastic ingestion or
entanglement have uneven distributions. Understanding where wildlife
encounters plastic is crucial for targeting research and mitigation.
Oceanic seabirds, particularly petrels, frequently ingest plastic, are
highly threatened, and cover vast distances during foraging and
migration. However, the spatial overlap between petrels and plastics is
poorly understood. Here we combine marine plastic density estimates with
individual movement data for 7137 birds of 77 petrel species to
estimate relative exposure risk. We identify high exposure risk areas in
the Mediterranean and Black seas, and the northeast Pacific, northwest
Pacific, South Atlantic and southwest Indian oceans. Plastic exposure
risk varies greatly among species and populations, and between breeding
and non-breeding seasons. Exposure risk is disproportionately high for
Threatened species. Outside the Mediterranean and Black seas, exposure
risk is highest in the high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of
the USA, Japan, and the UK. Birds generally had higher plastic exposure
risk outside the EEZ of the country where they breed. We identify
conservation and research priorities, and highlight that international
collaboration is key to addressing the impacts of marine plastic on
wide-ranging species.<p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-18128016740823012552023-09-07T09:35:00.000+02:002023-09-07T09:35:01.682+02:00The gender equality problem on the news!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQNdvUK3lCeIdZcaK-H8KpfhX0d1XRk19PphVvEivYJ9fbgwwyy1gPTw4W6y4fpxeA2nWsjMBJELKhzZasv6g93_9ZTDLwLILG6ycwHvpu4GY2TYdZAs_yVmg0HnfurQp5j4KZszChzUB8rxfOtxgsHE1nmLTBI2AvKmDGw3hoWsfw4CjQljEYh5gD9iYG/s1219/AnaS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="688" data-original-width="1219" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQNdvUK3lCeIdZcaK-H8KpfhX0d1XRk19PphVvEivYJ9fbgwwyy1gPTw4W6y4fpxeA2nWsjMBJELKhzZasv6g93_9ZTDLwLILG6ycwHvpu4GY2TYdZAs_yVmg0HnfurQp5j4KZszChzUB8rxfOtxgsHE1nmLTBI2AvKmDGw3hoWsfw4CjQljEYh5gD9iYG/w419-h237/AnaS.jpg" width="419" /></a></div><span style="font-size: medium;">The publication of the manuscript by <b style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;">Sebastián-González E et al. </b><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;">(2023) </span><a href="https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1011284" style="background-color: white; color: #336699; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; text-decoration-line: none;">Ten simple rules for a mom-friendly Academia.</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"> </span><i style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;">PLoS Comput Biol 19(8): e1011284. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1011284</i> has attracted the attention of the media. lead to community composition changes. At large spatial scales,
ecological barriers, such as biome boundaries, coastlines, and
elevation, can influence a community's ability to shift in response to
climate change. Yet, ecological barriers are rarely considered in
climate change studies, potentially hindering predictions of
biodiversity shifts. We used data from two consecutive European breeding
bird atlases to calculate the geographic distance and direction between
communities in the 1980s and their compositional best match in the
2010s and modeled their response to barriers. The ecological barriers
affected both the distance and direction of bird community composition
shifts, with coastlines and elevation having the strongest influence.
Our results underscore the relevance of combining ecological barriers
and community shift projections for identifying the forces hindering
community adjustments under global change. Notably, due to
(macro)ecological barriers, communities are not able to track their
climatic niches, which may lead to drastic changes, and potential
losses, in community compositions in the future. </p><p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-66971803261452108422023-08-21T13:26:00.006+02:002023-08-21T13:26:44.978+02:00New publication on Egyptian Vulture!<p><b>Gómez-López, G., Sanz‐Aguilar, A., [...] and Guillermo

frequently studied over the last century, although seldom using
long-term monitoring data. In raptors, the cost of raising males and
females is not equal, and several variables have been found to have
significant effects on sex ratio, including food availability, parental
age, and hatching order. Sex ratio differences between island
populations and their mainland counterparts have been poorly documented,
despite broad scientific literature on the island syndrome reporting
substantial differences in population demography and ecology. Here, we
assessed individual and environmental factors potentially affecting the
secondary sex ratio of the long-lived Egyptian vulture <i>Neophron percnopterus</i>. <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbflg0BDFk2H8Qpk9-k_p1KHtmdo8ZMNMw9b0ii4NdSICmVQJv2ZGDhWg2uMr5os_lKI5ejhuWyqGOm5vzVICpzYMtMTvY_gle8vx3D3O6tVxL1mackRk-CFjpfBfSrTMgFYdC8FQBlmD6XU6HVB2K1-CSkhrMo6SKC7QB8o_6-uhSzDlyIseICqtMvRu7/s880/Egyptian_Vulture_(18208369344).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="880" data-original-width="608" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbflg0BDFk2H8Qpk9-k_p1KHtmdo8ZMNMw9b0ii4NdSICmVQJv2ZGDhWg2uMr5os_lKI5ejhuWyqGOm5vzVICpzYMtMTvY_gle8vx3D3O6tVxL1mackRk-CFjpfBfSrTMgFYdC8FQBlmD6XU6HVB2K1-CSkhrMo6SKC7QB8o_6-uhSzDlyIseICqtMvRu7/s320/Egyptian_Vulture_(18208369344).jpg" width="221" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo. wikipedia.com<br /></td></tr></tbody></table>We used data collected from Spanish mainland and island populations
over a ca. 30-year period (1995–2021) to assess the effects of
insularity, parental age, breeding phenology, brood size, hatching
order, type of breeding unit (pairs vs. trios), and spatial and temporal
variability on offspring sex ratio. No sex bias was found at the
population level, but two opposite trends were observed between mainland
and island populations consistent with the island syndrome. Offspring
sex ratio was nonsignificantly female-biased in mainland Spain (0.47, <i>n</i> = 1112) but significantly male-biased in the Canary Islands (0.55, <i>n</i> = 499),
where a male-biased mortality among immatures could be compensating for
offspring biases and maintaining a paired adult sex ratio. Temporal and
spatial variation in food availability might also have some influence
on sex ratio, although the difficulties in quantifying them preclude us
from determining the magnitude of such influence. This study shows that
insularity influences the offspring sex ratio of the Egyptian vulture
through several processes that can affect island and mainland
populations differentially. Our research contributes to improving our
understanding of sex allocation theory by investigating whether sex
ratio deviations from parity are possible as a response to changing
environments comprised by multiple and complexly interrelated factors. </p><p> </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-43935855949082465082023-08-11T11:45:00.002+02:002023-08-11T11:45:31.526+02:00New Publication on gender equality in Academia!<p><b>Sebastián-González E, Graciá E, Morán-Ordóñez A, Pérez-Ibarra I,

science, especially in leadership positions and higher stages of the
scientific career. One of the main causes of career abandonment by women
is maternity, with many women leaving Academia after having their first
child because of the career penalties associated with motherhood. Thus,
more actions to help scientific moms to balance family and academic
work are urgently needed to increase representation of women and other
gender discriminated people in Academia. Besides mothers, these rules
may also benefit other groups such as mothers-to-be, fathers,
caregivers, and women in general. Increasing women representation in
science, including mothers, is critical because equality is a
fundamental right, and because more diverse working environments are
more productive and get to more optimal solutions. Here, we describe 10
simple rules that can be adopted in Academia to halt the abandonment of
scientific careers by women after motherhood. We strongly encourage
their implementation to increase gender diversity and equality in
science.</p><p> <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeurttHVfaywcDaFFAY_y-CBWPWzic-GfiH-x7jMuOgFQaC-oyh0QkQCbI2WjC-8OnwkAiwH6lwRirH9k0KjByD-e4auK42J6dnldrDMJy3p5FzefrZLZw_VvzT_l87APpBJgJ882d7KjEOrGQpQacHvtNJJUTgZvG9HywIATia_fMMuRM0ZnxBHbeQPo3/s2250/journal.pcbi.1011284.t001.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1712" data-original-width="2250" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeurttHVfaywcDaFFAY_y-CBWPWzic-GfiH-x7jMuOgFQaC-oyh0QkQCbI2WjC-8OnwkAiwH6lwRirH9k0KjByD-e4auK42J6dnldrDMJy3p5FzefrZLZw_VvzT_l87APpBJgJ882d7KjEOrGQpQacHvtNJJUTgZvG9HywIATia_fMMuRM0ZnxBHbeQPo3/w527-h400/journal.pcbi.1011284.t001.PNG" width="527" /></span><br /></a></div><br /><p></p><p> </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-28543568091603648622023-07-04T09:47:00.001+02:002023-08-23T18:36:58.511+02:00New Publication on sea turtles!<p><b>Santidrián Tomillo, P., Pujol, F., Félix, G., Núñez-Reyes, V., Saba, V., Tomas, J., Marco, A., 2023 <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320723002471 ">Colonization of new nesting areas could provide climate refuge to loggerhead turtles under climate change.</a> Biological Conservation, 284. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2023.110146</b></p><p><i>Abstract:</i> <span>Climate change can impact regional and global biodiversity for multiple reasons. changes in local climate at nesting beaches can affect egg and
hatchling survival and primary sex ratios. Sea turtles could respond to
climate change by occupying new nesting areas. The recent increase in
sporadic nesting in the western Mediterranean may indicate colonization
of new nesting beaches. We assessed the suitability of a western area,
the Balearic Islands (∼1500 km from current nesting grounds) as climate
refuge for loggerhead turtles (</span><span><i><a class="topic-link" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/caretta-caretta" title="Learn more about Caretta caretta from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages">Caretta caretta</a></i></span>)

(+40 years) and end (+80 years) of the 21st century. Using a correlative
approach based on air and sand temperatures, we predicted nest
temperatures and sex ratios for 19 beaches. Most beaches could provide
viable temperatures and predominantly produce male hatchlings under all
scenarios. </p><p></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs9SUVtCGruDsDi_8IAOskx1vbXDvwmvacRPBe_TzlUJna8ihB0wlBxM4kRBw_SSwVSkURM0Vy7kCYOb30fgeTLxhasrFKJ60FcXj4b3kRBsrnPvkQVIs-azwYdf5TQ5usfu8KzZfPj4ECgS0QsuFqjpMyFbcZQQOawlUvbYIvNN5ytr7ngshrviNXjQ/s2169/Loggerhead_Sea_Turtle_(Caretta_caretta)_2.jpeg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1422" data-original-width="2169" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs9SUVtCGruDsDi_8IAOskx1vbXDvwmvacRPBe_TzlUJna8ihB0wlBxM4kRBw_SSwVSkURM0Vy7kCYOb30fgeTLxhasrFKJ60FcXj4b3kRBsrnPvkQVIs-azwYdf5TQ5usfu8KzZfPj4ECgS0QsuFqjpMyFbcZQQOawlUvbYIvNN5ytr7ngshrviNXjQ/w400-h263/Loggerhead_Sea_Turtle_(Caretta_caretta)_2.jpeg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo: wikipedia.com<br /></td></tr></tbody></table> Sex ratio projections were male-biased but with an increasing
female ratio throughout time. Although mean sex ratio under the
+80 years scenario was still male-biased, the warmest beaches could
provide female-biased ratios, which are similar to those estimated for
current nesting sites. The Balearic Islands could function as climate
refuge for loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean because temperatures
could favor embryo viability and a male sex ratio. However, a nesting
population may not be established until the percentage of female
hatchlings increases and turtles return to nest as adults. Conditions at
sea should also favor survival of hatchlings and juveniles. Because
western Mediterranean beaches are popular tourist destinations, active
management may be needed to protect nesting populations.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-24325705291633612542023-07-04T09:45:00.003+02:002023-07-04T09:45:36.949+02:00Ten years of Storm Petrel monitoring in Ibiza! <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilkb_A0jlaa_IYVTFMEM1HPxHUr24iPSv-ipDCXqz9i4T6PpUFs3ETvtZRUE_nlvmoFNzbtlo051bR8DCPBXeB_9BAZV7tIu4jubBv0HSzVO_3pZIeRaWECD1TAWzLVNiji9FWPemFYJ540t3j9xW7LBfyfO3oyAmIyDjVT35YFlociMBnzOQyI7EVlgPw/s1140/fumarell-1140x570.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="1140" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilkb_A0jlaa_IYVTFMEM1HPxHUr24iPSv-ipDCXqz9i4T6PpUFs3ETvtZRUE_nlvmoFNzbtlo051bR8DCPBXeB_9BAZV7tIu4jubBv0HSzVO_3pZIeRaWECD1TAWzLVNiji9FWPemFYJ540t3j9xW7LBfyfO3oyAmIyDjVT35YFlociMBnzOQyI7EVlgPw/w433-h217/fumarell-1140x570.jpg" width="433" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;">A. species of the Balearic Islands. The extensive phenotypic diversity
among extant isolated populations makes the species a great insular
model system for eco-evolutionary studies, as well as a challenging
target for conservation management plans. Here we report the first high
quality chromosome-level assembly and annotation of the <i>P. lilfordi</i>
genome, along with its mitogenome, based on a mixed sequencing strategy
(10X Genomics linked reads, Oxford Nanopore Technologies long reads and
Hi-C scaffolding) coupled with extensive transcriptomic data (Illumina
and PacBio). </p><p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUNkkuHOswZbVQ9AxvguI3zZS9Omu9VQCyTkLVyFzb4C3WjbXMpkFctZHWnQYBZT7Su6EyNB0erwgJtsVd4cJBDfGEJSCulmIA1AGr3cb-Uzjy-rWMu9HhB3E5mbbmi7zevHXrL3WaEyUVPilgHcwGEZwDYD25eKSSlQNNokjk4PRQLUHVowo2GjT2Ag/s3295/EsCurt_JUKI.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1853" data-original-width="3295" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUNkkuHOswZbVQ9AxvguI3zZS9Omu9VQCyTkLVyFzb4C3WjbXMpkFctZHWnQYBZT7Su6EyNB0erwgJtsVd4cJBDfGEJSCulmIA1AGr3cb-Uzjy-rWMu9HhB3E5mbbmi7zevHXrL3WaEyUVPilgHcwGEZwDYD25eKSSlQNNokjk4PRQLUHVowo2GjT2Ag/s320/EsCurt_JUKI.jpg" width="320" /></a>The genome assembly (1.5 Gb) is highly contiguous (N50 =
90 Mb) and complete, with 99% of the sequence assigned to candidate
chromosomal sequences and >97% gene completeness. We annotated a
total of 25,663 protein-coding genes translating into 38,615 proteins.
Comparison to the genome of the related species <i>Podarcis muralis</i>
revealed substantial similarity in genome size, annotation metrics,
repeat content, and a strong collinearity, despite their evolutionary
distance (~18-20 MYA). This genome expands the repertoire of available
reptilian genomes and will facilitate the exploration of the molecular
and evolutionary processes underlying the extraordinary phenotypic
diversity of this insular species, while providing a critical resource
for conservation genomics.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743829599352520461.post-39370957508785938872023-04-03T13:51:00.003+02:002023-04-11T09:59:35.013+02:00GEDA at school !<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
